December 13, 2010: The Post Service Component Hotel

The request for pub-club venues took us farther afield than e'er inwards Dec - upwards into the wilds of Coburg to sample the wares of The Post Office Hotel. Owned past times a motley crew of Melbourne music identities, including Tex Perkins too members of Dallas Crane, The Post Office feels similar a pub transported similar a shot from the dorsum streets of Fitzroy to Sydney Road.

It's a pretty massive infinite - an airy front end bar (complete amongst jukebox - no doubtfulness loaded upwards amongst all the Ladyboyz hits), a fashionable dining expanse too a spacious, covered beer garden. We laid upwards out the back, enjoying a rare twenty-four hours of Melbourne sunshine. On Mon nights, the nutrient options are restricted to the bar bill of fare - 5 mains ($20 a pop) too a similar publish of sides too starters ($10). The vego options are quite limited, but at that spot were plenty for Cindy too I to discovery 2 meals worth of goodness.

I went for the main, a dark-green edible bean tagine, amongst seeded cous-cous too soft herbs.

This was surprisingly successful - a spicy stew of crispy beans, soft cous-cous too loads of herby flavours. I idea it powerfulness larn irksome equally my entire meal, but the richness of the sauce had me scraping out the bottom of the tagine.

Cindy decided to combine about smaller dishes - battered spud moons too tamarind roasted mushrooms amongst sesame yoghurt labna ($10 each). The mushrooms came out swimming inwards an oily too delicious liquid, which had infused them amongst a sweetness too slight tang (presumably the tamarind). The yoghurt cheese on the side didn't look to add together a lot to the dish but the tender too tasty mushrooms were surprisingly great.

And thus at that spot were the chips. Thickly battered picayune chunks of glorious spud - Cindy was pretty thrilled amongst these, too guarded them jealously.

other pubs we've pub-clubbed at (the total dining bill of fare doesn't supply many to a greater extent than options either) too it's non the cheapest pub nutrient around, but it's good prepared too served upwards inwards a lovely venue. Certainly worth a see if you're inwards the area. Who knows, perchance you'll discovery Tex working the bar.
