Kuala Lumpur

June 28-30 & July 8-9, 2015

Our travels in Vietnam were bookended amongst a fleck of fourth dimension inwards Kuala Lumpur, a metropolis nosotros previously visited in 2010. This fourth dimension circular nosotros had friends inwards residence, together with they guided us to drinks yesteryear a 33rd flooring puddle on our arrival, followed yesteryear banana leafage curries for dinner. If retentivity serves, the dinner venue was Devi's Corner. Their total carte included a attain of mock meats together with vege curries, but sadly these were unavailable when nosotros turned upwardly belatedly on a Dominicus night. It's a goodness matter their basic vege plate is then impressive! We were treated to mountains of rice, every bit much dahl every bit nosotros could handle, chilli pickles, milky cucumber chunks together with an irresistible pinkish fry-up that nosotros intend was bitter melon (though it wasn't truly bitter at all, to a greater extent than sweetness together with silky similar eggplant). While many other diners ate their meals adeptly amongst their hands, nosotros were grateful for the cutlery available at the table. I was every bit good pleased yesteryear the lime barley potable recommended yesteryear my friend, almost similar a tangy bubble tea amongst its chewy grains.

In a 3rd episode of lucky accommodation location, nosotros were inside walking distance of caught our fancy those 5 years ago. I couldn't breadbasket fried nutrient then early on inwards the twenty-four sixty minutes menstruum but Michael together with Clamps gave it a goodness go. Between them they pose away a nasi lemak, fried noodle, kopi o ais, together with a bowl of assorted battered veges - it all lived upwardly to Michael's fond memories. Only 1 staff fellow member was proficient inwards English linguistic communication during Blue Boy's repose morn rotation; his assistance, accompanied yesteryear a fleck of pointing, served us only fine given the all-vegetarian options. (Note that at that spot is egg together with dairy hither though!)

After exploring the Islamic Arts Museum (see a few light, airy photos inwards the slideshow at the halt of this post), nosotros wandered Chinatown seeking lunch. Plan H5N1 failed but the Happy Cow website on my local friend's data-enabled band turned upwardly a fine Plan B inwards Wan Fo Yuan. It was a footling smoky together with claustrophobic but provided a revolving tabletop of fine mock meats, which we'd picked from pastel-coloured albums of over-exposed photos. We disagreed whether the pepper fish, claypot or spicy beans, eggplant together with okra were best... that is, until the satay sticks came out. Friends, they were THE BEST.

We striking Brickfields for our 2d dinner, seeking a veg*n Indian meal. I didn't realise we'd been to Gopala before, together with was overwhelmed all over over again yesteryear the 150 items on their menu. Michael together with Clamps ordered upwardly big, sampling roti canai, mushroom "65" (more pinkish batter!) together with 2 kinds of fried rice. My paneer butter masala was peculiarly recommended yesteryear the staff but entirely so-so, inwards spite of only about dainty spices. I was means to a greater extent than into their orangish lassi.

We circled dorsum on veg Indian nutrient for the concluding nighttime of our holiday, recognising Sangeetha from the street. With only about other long menu, nosotros couldn't assist ordering large - Milo ice, lime mint cooler together with a fiery ginger lemon cool, palak paneer, breads, together with a spectacular triumvirate of mushroom masala dosa, chilli gobi nestling together with veg manchurian. It left no room for fifty-fifty looking at their neon-hued sweets cabinet.

Already nostalgic for cơm chay, Clamps sussed out a serve-yourself nutrient courtroom buffet for breakfast earlier check-out (though nosotros don't know its name, it was located at street grade adjacent to the Ocean 77 Hotel on Petaling St). It was an omnivorous spread then Michael together with Clamps picked through the options cautiously, notwithstanding creating sizable plates of food.

Instead, I settled on a twain of fried sweets from a nearby marketplace position stall.

Our concluding KL shout-out must become to Be Lohas, an organic health-centred vegetarian cafe located inwards the aerodrome (level 2, KLIA 2 - exterior security). Twice nosotros fueled upwardly at that spot piece waiting to board a plane. Their mini hot dogs together with soy cheese toast fingers were every bit delightful every bit their larger meals were satisfying - Clamps was really nearly defeated yesteryear his claypot amongst noodles! While their dishes had a distinctly macrobiotic edge, they weren't brusk on flavor - my avocado smoothie was the outset 1 to gustation to a greater extent than of the fruit than of carbohydrate together with Michael gushed close his spicy soy milk laksa. I stretched out my Ramadan-special nasi lemak for only about time, browsing betwixt the dark-brown rice, crunchy coleslaw, together with curried yuba, earlier finishing amongst fruit tea together with a twain of dates.

Though nosotros didn't pass every bit long exploring Kuala Lumpur every bit nosotros did inwards Vietnam nosotros enjoyed the city's distinctly dissimilar approach to veg*n eating. The thick sauces together with curry noodles fifty-fifty conform the Melbourne wintertime we've returned to.
