June 6, 2011: The Gasometer Iv

11/11/2013: We're distressing to study the closure of our dear Gasometer.

In tardily May the Gasometer Hotel announced a novel wintertime carte too Michael promptly scheduled us inward for a Pub Club visit. There's a distinctive whiff of Americana most it, amongst items ranging from latkes too matso ball soup through to southern fried chicken, corn dogs too Buffalo wings. H5N1 reassuring constant is clear labelling of vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free too diet-adaptable dishes.

I placed our society behind a span of large groups too gave Gasometer's hot pear cider a go. (It's controversial - I loved it, though a few other inward our grouping actually didn't.) I was pleasantly surprised past times the friendly service too prompt delivery of our dinner nether the circumstances, peculiarly afterward hearing many long-wait reports from others.

In an odd twist Michael too I split upwards our mains downwards the middle. I started out amongst the vegan bbq ribs ($18), choosing (the non-vegan version of) mac & cheese too apple tree slaw every bit our bonus sides. I couldn't mistake it!  The seitan 'ribs' were tender inside, non at all rubbery, amongst a nicely basted outside too a piffling chilli kicking inward the accompanying sauce. The mac & cheese was polish too creamy without a hint of glugginess, too the coleslaw offered a prissy pickley contrast. I was reluctant to transcend the 2nd one-half over to Michael too snuck a spoonful to a greater extent than mac than I was entitled to.

Little did I know that the 2nd principal was fifty-fifty better! The vegan southern fried chicken burger ($16.50) was phenomenal - the closest I've come upwards to the (regretfully) dear KFC burgers of my pre-veg days. And really, the lineament of the bun too fixings hither is hence much better. Mostly, though, I was obsessing over the spiced crunchy too totally non-greasy crumbing on their home-made 'chicken'.

The dessert carte is distinctly pie-focused at the moment, too nosotros shared a span of them amongst friends (at roughly $10 apiece). While they were piffling to a greater extent than than a slice-and-serve suggestion for the kitchen, they took a long fourth dimension to arrive. The apple, raspberry too lemon ane was real much to Michael's tastes, amongst quite a sour twang.

The Mexican choc cream meringue pie was pretty adept - a deport on dry, but amongst a lovely polish chocolate filling too a smoky chilli finish. The meringue provided a chip to a greater extent than saccharide than I needed, too I would almost accept preferred merely to smother the pie inward the cooling unsweetened cream instead.

While the desserts exactly barely delivered, our mains were exceptionally good. I see this is the best Western-style mock meat I've e'er ordered. For serious. Vegos who avoid the mock mightiness notice joy inward pierogi, stuffed cabbage leaves, pot pie too the gain of sides, but I can't imagine deviating from that burger this winter.
