July 29, 2011: Warung Agus

Confessions of a Food Nazi brought it to our attending too is equally thorough a write-up equally you lot should need. It's been to a greater extent than than 2 years, though, since AOF's review was published too what's more, I am a ridiculous completist, then I'm going to write close it too! H5N1 eating theatre this lovely deserves renewed endorsement every then often.

Warung Agus is but close equally veg-friendly equally meat-serving restaurants get. All the vegetarian dishes are marked amongst a V on the carte du jour too nosotros listen that (with the possible exception of dessert) they're all vegan. Roughly one-half the items accept that V on them too they're appetising, protein-rich dishes.

Another characteristic that I appreciate? H5N1 total page of interesting non-alcoholic beverages. Many are, admittedly, Balinese-style preparations of tea too java that you lot mightiness non desire amongst your meal, but you lot tin also teach house-made iced fruit drinks featuring lemon, banana or avocado ($7). I know I should locomote to a greater extent than adventurous but a sweet'n'sour lemon imbibe hooks me every fourth dimension - all the ameliorate that this ane features slushy blended ice.

There was a kid seating mishap on the night, pregnant that nosotros needed to shift tables betwixt ordering too receiving our food. While nosotros weren't all that spot out the staff were enormously apologetic, amongst the manager/chef fifty-fifty emerging from the kitchen to give thank you lot us for our agreement too give us a costless handbasket of cassava chips (krupuk singkong, unremarkably $6), assuring us that the peanut sauce was non garnished amongst shrimp paste. (We hadn't said the v-word all black but he clearly noticed from our fellowship - amazing!) What a process - these are thick, airy, crunchy too lightly spiced crackers amongst the silkiest peanut sauce I've always eaten. I could barely believe my eyes when, ane time two-thirds of the agency through the crackers, they replaced our sauce amongst some other fresh, hot bowlful! Heaven.

The vegetarian nasi campur ($28) is a tasty sampler of crunchy sweet-soy tempeh, sesaur (spiced golden shredded kokosnoot sweetened amongst palm sugar), pecel (mung beans) too peanut sauce-smothered tofu roughly steamed rice, amongst a few lightly pickled vegetables on the side. Not pictured are the costless condiments - a tangy lemongrass-chilli mix too a fiery chilli sauce that Michael dug into amongst equal enthusiasm.

As I gobbled my portion of the nasi campur I gave our other chief a brace of sidelong glances. The monochrome tuung mebasa santen lalah manis ($20) couldn't perchance competitor it, right? Actually, this dish of eggplant too tofu was but equally gob-smackingly good! The gravy is smoky, sweetness soy-ish too satiny amongst a splash of kokosnoot milk. We were glad for some extra rice ($3) to soak upward equally much of it equally possible.

Dessert was non an option. Our mains were incredibly filling (I fearfulness the banquet!), too had plenty of palm saccharide too kokosnoot milk to teach circular anyway. I await a lot of mains exceeding $20 too I reckon these delivered. The nutrient was quite sweetness too (coconut-)creamy across the board, but the condiments provided allow hot-heads flavor to taste. Sweeter withal were the staff! They were faultlessly welcoming too sufficiently attentive. I'll gladly render when I've a somewhat exceptional occasion to celebrate.

(It's difficult to believe but our repast was ultimately upstaged past times the evening's entertainment. Compared to the 2 years I've sat on AOF's review, I've been waiting a decade for Pulp to render downwards under. They were form plenty to pick out their greatest hits, a dorky Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation present too a dolphin amongst them.)

Accessibility: There is a pocket-sized measurement upward into the eating theatre too a measurement downwards betwixt the 2 dining rooms. Tables accept alone low-to-medium amounts of infinite roughly them, though a fairly broad path has been made from the forepart door, correct roughly to the farthest tables. There's total tabular array service. We didn't see the toilets. The air is real thick amongst incense then beware if you lot accept a sensitive olfactory system.
